Why I Wish the iPhone Was a Flip Phone

January 8, 2008

So we’re on vacation in Fiji. Our flight gets delayed, so I called my parents (who were picking us up) to let them know the new plan. Hung up. Stuck the phone in my pocket. Went for a walk. Didn’t think about the phone for almost an hour. Pulled the phone out of my pocket. [...]

Day 1: Auckland

November 28, 2007

We arrived this morning in Auckland. Qantas made the flight about as pleasant as possible, given that it was a twelve-and-a-half hour flight. This was helped in part by having a flight that wasn’t entirely full, but also by the fact that Qantas’ international flight crews are among the most thoughtful I’ve encountered on any [...]

New Travels and a Photoblog

November 26, 2007

I’m writing this article from the International Terminal at Los Angeles airport, while we wait our turn to board an overnight flight to Auckland, New Zealand. One of Adobe’s great benefits is the ability to take a sabbatical every five years; this is three weeks off in addition to your normal (very generous) allotment of [...]

September Update: Hiking in California, Getting Sick, Getting Injured, Getting Shipped

September 24, 2006

I’ve been a bit quiet here on this blog for the last few weeks, so here’s a bit of a retrospective on what’s been happening lately…

I was barely home a week from Alaska when I shipped off again, this time to California for a few days of work on Lightroom. Over the Labor Day [...]

When a Road Closes in Alaska…

August 26, 2006

… the workaround can be mighty long.

We were getting set to leave our lodge just outside Denali National Park on Saturday morning when we got word from the hotel office that the main highway from Fairbanks to Anchorage had washed out to the south of us. (The Anchorage paper that I’m linking ran [...]

Back from Alaska … Final Few Pictures

August 26, 2006

We have been back from Alaska now for a few days. Getting caught up on the various household responsibilities took priority for most of this week, so I’m just now getting caught up on pictures and blogging. I’ve posted a few new pictures on my Flickr account, including one of my personal [...]

From Denali

August 17, 2006

Yesterday, we drove halfway up to Denali National Park and stayed at the beautiful McKinley Princess Lodge at Trapper Creek. Today, we finished the drive and are staying at the also-beautiful Denali Princess Lodge. Sadly, we have no stunning images of the mountain to share yet. She has been hiding behind a veil [...]

A Day at the Zoo

August 17, 2006

While back in Anchorage yesterday, we took a little time to go visit the Alaska Zoo. This was mostly for fun, but we did manage to capture a few interesting images along the way. I experimented a bit with split-tone processing in Lightroom with these two images. I’d love to hear what you think [...]

Things We Would Have Done in Seward

August 15, 2006

Anyone who travels much knows that anytime you leave a place, you leave behind a list of things you would have liked to have done there if you had had more time, or known about them earlier.

Having just left Seward, I figured I’d share my list:

Stayed at the cabins on Resurrection Bay. [...]

Seward Sightseeing Tour

August 14, 2006

Yesterday, we went on a wildlife sightseeing tour conducted by Alaska Saltwater Adventures. We were fortunate to have great weather and great guides. We were out of season for whales, but we did get a chance to see some other wildlife and scenery.

Barely out of harbor, we were graced with the presence [...]

Hi, I’m Eric. I’m a photographer, blogger, and software developer based near Seattle, Washington. I’ve been creating great software for desktop computers since 1983 and great photography since 1993.
